The VOLXFEST invites you to a three-part series of events as part of the Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. Through the art and power of celebration, participants and visitors will experience a culture of togetherness and cultural affiliations from different perspectives. VOLXFEST experiments and plays with the coexistence of traditional forms of expression and contemporary art. Whether traditional or artistic - planned meets spontaneous, choreographies meet the free dance floor.
Various workshops will be offered - registration and more information can be found here!
Archive rehearsal with Simon Wascher and Hermann Härtel
In the archive rehearsal, music is played from the Perfahl manuscript. Probably the most extensive surviving collection of 18th century rural dance music from Bad Aussee dating from 1799, which can be found in the Austrian Folk Song Archive, comprises 1356 unsigned monophonic melodies of an older Laendler and Schleunigen type. These melodies are traced in the archive sample. It deals with questions of the different interpretations and playing styles of these specific genres from the traditional tradition.
The violin sets the tone. Anyone who can play along is invited, even with other instruments. Dancing and listening are also allowed.
On the occasion of the Volxfest project as part of the Capital of Culture Bad Ischl, Salzkammergut 2024, the focus will be on archive material from the Salzkammergut region in several workshops, regulars' tables etc. in spring.
For this reason, 100 melodies from the Perfahl manuscript in B flat can be researched in the new melody research tool at http://www.volksmusikdatenbank.at.

Folk dance & hip hop - the healing power of community!
Tanzworkshop mit Farah Deen & Katharina Oberhauser
In the workshop with Farah Deen (professional hip hop & house dancer) & Katharina Oberhauser (leader of the Altaussee folk dance group) you can experience the lowest common denominator of Austrian folk dances and hip hop up close: The healing power of a community!
In addition to various folk dances in a circle and in pairs, such as the Styrian or the Landler, we also learn simple social dances from hip hop and look for similarities and parallels. What connects us? What strengthens us as a community? How can we as a community create a safe space for everyone?
In the end, it's all about having fun together and experiencing the physical connection to yourself, as a couple or as a collective in a circle in a creative exchange! Join us and be inspired by different dance cultures and their music!

Jodeln: Back to Game
Jodelworkshop mit Markus Prieth
We yodel, play, laugh and let ourselves be carried away by the sound of leisure for three hours. Maybe we'll start with yodels from the folk song archives, develop dances and stories, take off into space to give the world a weightless smile. Maybe everything will turn out completely differently. What is certain is that we yodel, that we equate learning with playing and that we don't want to miss a single opportunity to extract a dance or a game from the moment, a yodel.

Volxfestorchester / Salz Kammer Groove
mit Irma-Maria Troy und Markus Prieth
Trumpet, Quetschn, violin, electronics or nose flute, the Volxfestorchester takes everything, even curiosities and special instruments are welcome! So join Irma-Maria Troy and Markus Prieth and play your way through manuscripts from the Salzkammergut, through the dances of a wide variety of folk music and, just as playfully, we will find our very own Salzkammer groove. The two musicians are at home in many genres and the joy of playing is their method!
Wir sind froh, wenn du Grundkenntnisse auf deinem Instrument(en) mitbringst und von diesen Kenntnissen ab, ist jedes Spielniveau herzlich willkommen. Egal wo man steht, es gibt immer was zu tun!
Following the Volxsfest orchestra “rehearsal”, there will be a Volxsfest regulars' table where we can put everything we have learned into practice straight away. We will really celebrate and perform with our salt chamber groove at the two Volxfests themselves.

Goldhaube, Kopftuch, Hut… suchen dich!
Hannah Wimmer und Irene Egger
The wearing of elaborately tied headscarves, special hats, embroidered hoods, even made of gold on special occasions is a form of festive dress that is widespread across many cultures. In Austria, this includes the gold hood. In some forms it is reminiscent of the helmet of Pallas Athena; as the goddess of wisdom, she makes wise, forward-looking, trend-setting decisions for the common good with a cool and clear mind. In her field of activity as the goddess of peace, she is the personification of legislative and executive power and thus watches over the separation of powers, one of the basic principles of constitutional, democratic constitutions.
Do you own a gold hood, headscarf or hat? Do you have few occasions to wear it, do you lack like-minded people? Here's your chance! For the Volxfest as part of the Cultural Capital Salzkammergut Bad Ischl 2024, we are looking for people who would like to wear a special headdress when celebrating together and thus set an example for peace, human rights and the common good.
